Encyclopedia > B.Sc.

A Bachelor of Science (B.S., B.Sc. or less commonly, S.B. or Sc.B.) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded for courses taken that generally last three years in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Quebec, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand or four years in the rest of North America and Scotland.

In North America, a Bachelor of Science degree usually requires a student to take a majority of their courses (usually 1/2 or 3/4) in the sciences, namely life sciences, physical sciences, or the mathematical sciences. Most universities plan the Science Bachelor degree as a liberal arts course schedule.

In the UK, which subjects are considered science subjects varies, e.g. economics degrees may be BA in one university but B.Sc. in another.

A Bachelor of Science receives the designation BSc or BS for a major/pass degree and BSc(Hons) or BS(Hon) for an honours degree.
