Shareholders of Switzerland's BBC Brown Boveri & Company and ASEA A.B. of Sweden approved the proposed merger of the two companies to form the world's largest electrical engineering group.
Brown Boveri's chairman, Fritz Leutwiler, said the merger would create a European concern capable of challenging the United States and Japanese giants of the electrical engineering industry.
Brown Boveri would operate as separate companies with their own national identities.
