The strongest FM signal on 95.5 MHz, comes from the Mendip transmitter, near Wells, which covers Bristol and the whole of the former Avon area as well as almost all of the shire county of Somerset. Such is the strength of the transmitter that it also can be heard in much of rural Wiltshire and south-east Wales (even as far as Swansea), As far north as the Worcestershire border and as far south as Seaton, Devon. BBC Somerset Sound and BBC Radio Bristol share many programmes, mainly during off-peak hours. Due to the hilly nature of the area, the Ilchester Crescent transmitter on 94.9 MHz fills in much-needed gaps in reception over central Bristol - although this transmitter has now been moved to Dundry, south of Bristol. In September, 2006, Radio Bristol re-launched its weekday schedule. Long-serving presenter, John Turner, moved to Breakfast, Dave Barrett returned to the station to take over mid-morning and Richard Lewis moved to afternoons. Another veteran, Keith Warmington, now presents the regional late night show between 10 and 1 which concentrates on arts and entertainment across the BBC West region. To accommodate Keith's new programme, Trevor Fry moved earlier in the evening between 7 and 10.


Since the reshuffle, John Turner has retired and Geoff Twentyman has taken over breakfast while a long-term successor is found for the programme.


Radio Bristol's main competitor is GWR on 96.3FM. GWR bought up many national independent local radio stations in the 1990s. There are also Kiss 101 (formerly vibe fm formerly vibe 101 formerly Galaxy 101) and Star 107.2. The Bath transmitter also broadcasts GWR on 103FM and Bath FM on 107.9FM. Mendip also broadcasts Orchard FM on 102.6FM, and Kiss 101 (which has a much more powerful signal than Radio Bristol) as well as the area's TV. Radio Bristol recently ran a competition open to 11 - 16 year olds, to work with the station for a year as Young Correspondents. Out of hundreds of entries, twenty youths attended a grand final at the station, where they were set tasks and interviewed before the final five were chosen. The final five were Angus Harrison, Dominic Mather, Deanna Quirke, Joanna Hawkins and Ed Franklin- they can now be heard reporting on stories which interest them, and contributing to shows on a regular basis.

Frequency Change

On Monday 12 November 2007 BBC Radio Bristol's primary frequency will change to 94.9 MHz from the Dundry transmitter. The former 95.5 MHz frequency from Mendip will commence broadcasting BBC Somerset programmes from 3 December 2007.
