Encyclopedia > BBC Radio Cleveland

BBC Radio Cleveland is the BBC Local Radio service for the English areas of Teesside, County Durham and some of North Yorkshire. Launched on 31 December 1970 as Radio Teesside, it now broadcasts from its studios in Middlesbrough on 95.0 (Bilsdale West Moor), 95.8 (Whitby) FM and DAB. It became known as Radio Cleveland on 1 April 1974, when the county of Cleveland was formed, and moved to new offices in 1983. On April 1, 1996, the county of Cleveland split into Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, and Redcar and Cleveland. These four boroughs along with nearby Darlington now form the governmental sub-region of Tees Valley. Also included in the main listening area is the Army's main garrison at Catterick Garrison, which is also included in the transmission area of Radio York on 104.3FM. The station recently announced it was to rebrand itself as BBC Tees, a brand already associated with its Where I Live website and BBC Bus, due to its broadcasting area no longer being associated the name Cleveland. Cleveland, England - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (617 words)
The county was called "Cleveland", instead of "Teesside" as originally suggested, due to fears in areas not part of the old Teesside county borough that it represented a takeover.
Cleveland has a significant industrial heritage arising from its central role in the 19th century iron boom that led to Middlesbrough growing from a hamlet into a major industrial town in only a few decades.
The Cleveland Hills, in the southern part of the district, were key suppliers of the ironstone that was essential to the running of the blast furnaces alongside the River Tees.
