A Brief History

  • BBC Wildlife was launched in January 1963 as Animals magazine.
  • In 1983, it was relaunched as BBC Wildlife magazine by BBC Magazines and edited for 23 years by Rosamund Kidman Cox.
  • In May 2004, BBC Wildlife moved to Origin Publishing and current editor Sophie Stafford took over, after two years working on the title as a section editor.
  • In April 2006, BBC Wildlife was redesigned and now has a fresh, modern, natural look.

The BBC is a quasi-autonomous Public Corporation operating as a public service broadcaster incorporated under a Royal Charter reviewed on a 10 yearly basis, currently run by a board of governors appointed by the government for a term of four years (formerly five years), though this is soon to be replaced with a BBC Trust.
BBC Worldwide Limited is the wholly owned commercial subsidiary of the BBC responsible for the commercial exploitation of BBC programmes and other properties, including a number of television stations throughout the world.
BBC Worldwide also maintains the publishing arm of the BBC and it is the third-largest publisher of consumer magazines in the United Kingdom [9].
