The E24 was a replacement for the CS and CSL coupes first produced in 1965. Production started in March of 1976 with two models: 630CS and 633CSi. Originally the bodies were manufactured by Karmann but that was later moved inhouse to BMW. In 1978 a more powerful variant, the 635CSi was introduced but the US only had the 633CSi. The US would not receive the 3.5 liter engine until 1985. BMW 3. ...
In 1982 the E24 changed slightly, with an improved interior and slightly modified exterior. US spec 633CSi's had the M30 3.2 liter 181hp engine up until 1984. In 1985 displacement was bumped up to 3.5 liters and horsepower jumped slightly to 182hp. The big difference, however, was torque. Whereas the 3.2 liter had 195 ft/lbs @ 4,000rpm, the 3.5 liter powerplant managed 214 ft/lbs @ 4,000 rpm. In Europe 1984 saw the introduction of the M635CSi, essentially an E24 powered by the M1s mighty powerplant (the M88 now putting out 286hp). 16" BBS 3 piece wheels and a deeper air dam completed the package. The US received its own M series E24 in 1987 but it was called simply M6 and thanks to emission regulations it came with "only" 256hp. The 1988 E24s came with ellipsoid headlights and ALL models (US and Euro) received standard integrated bumpers (versus pre-88 vehicles which had both a european standard: small and not reinforced, and a US standard: 5mph bumpers). 1989 was the last year for the beautiful E24 with production stopping in April. The replacement for the E24 was the considerably heavier and more complex BMW 8 series. 1997 BMW 850 CSi The BMW 8 Series (chassis code BMW E31) was a V8 or V12 engined 2-door 2+2 coupe built by BMW as a substitute for the original BMW 6 Series in 1989. ...
