The Byelorussian SSR (Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic; Russian Белору́сская Сове́тская Социалисти́ческая Респу́блика, Belarusian Беларуская Савецкая Сацыялістычная Рэспубліка) was one of the four original founding members of the U.S.S.R. in 1922, together with Ukrainian SSR, Transcaucasian SFSR and the Russian SFSR.


The republic was in the west part of the USSR and its capital was Minsk. The Byelorussian SSR was created on January 1, Belarusians - 81%

    After the Second World War Belarus was given a seat in the United Nations Ukraine, so Belarus became one of the founding members of the UN. The republic became independent in Belarus.

    After the reunification of Western Belarus with the BSSR (November 1939) 5 regions and 101 districts were formed on this territory: Baranovichi region, 26 districts; Bialystok region, 24 districts; Brest region, 18 districts; Vileika region, 22 districts; Pinsk region, 11districts.
    Between 1956 and 1962, the enlargement of districts was carried out in the BSSR: 11 districts were abolished in 1956; 3, in 1957; 14, in 1959; 15, in 1960; 1, in 1961; 54, in 1962; 23 districts were restored in 1965; 17 restored in 1966.
