Encyclopedia > Babenhausen

Babenhausen is a town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the river Gersprenz, 25 km southeast of Frankfurt, and 14 km west of Aschaffenburg. South of its municipal borders, the mountain range of the Odenwald is situated about 15 km away. The landscape is rather flat due to the landscape forming process of the Gersprenz and other small river. Some sections along the Gersprenz are nature preserve with valuable plants and animals, e.g. the white stork or the king fisher. The forrests in the municipal area are mostly pine woods on ice-age dunes with heath fields. The sandy soil is regionally famous for growing Asparagus. The town is divided into 6 units:


1. The actual town of Babenhausen, including an medieval core with a castle (12-13th century), numerous old houses and a large part of the city wall (1445). Babenhausen was chartered as town in 1295 being an establishment of the German dynasty of Hohenstaufen.


2. Harreshausen, as small rurally coined village just 1 km away from Babenhausen. Posseses an own castle. At its rim, the "Schöne Eiche" (engl. beautiful oak), the tribal mother of all pyramidal oaks, a variant of the pedunculate oak (quercus robur) was created by mutation.


3. Hergershausen, elected as the 3rd most beautiful village in Hesse


4. Harpertshausen


5. Sickenhofen


6. Langstadt
