Babia G ra in Polish or Babia Hora in Slovak is situated in Western Beskidy Mountains. It is the highest peak of this part of the Carpathian Mountains - 1725 m above sea level.

History

Babia G ra was mentioned first time in the 15th century chronicle of Jan Dlugosz. It was first time placed on the map in 1558. To the end of 17th cent. most of information about this mountain had rather a character of legends and tales. The first known ascent was made in 1782 by the court astronomer of king Stanislaw August Poniatowski Jowin Fryderyk Bończa Bystrzycki. The period of the scientific investigations begins in the second half of 19th century.


Nature

The first efforts to protect this area were made in the 1930s. In 1933 the Reserve of Babia G ra was established. Later, in 1954 the Babia G National Park (Babiog rski Park Narodowy) was established with the area of 17.04 km . In 1976 it was one of the first Biosphere Reserves in the world. For long time Babia G ra National Park was the smallest of Polish parks. In 1997 it was enlarged up to 33.92 km and a buffer zone was created of 84.37 km . 10.62 km are under strict protection. Nowadays, there are new postulates of tightening the international cooperation with Slovakia.


Tourism

Tourism in the region of Babia Gora is quite late phenomenon. First tourists in 19th century were mainly intellectuals from nearby Cracow. Since that time the village of Zawoja became important mountain resort.
