Medicinæ Baccalaureus & Baccalaureus Chirurgiæ (MB BChir or MB ChB or MB, BS or variations thereof) are the two degrees awarded after a course in medicine and surgery at a university in the United Kingdom and other places following the British tradition, such as Australian, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Jamaican, and Indian medical schools. In theory they are two separate degrees, but in practice the two are usually treated as one. The degrees are the British equivalent of the M.D. A degree is any of a wide range of status levels conferred by institutions of higher education, such as universities, normally as the result of successfully completing a program of study. ...

Classification of degree The MB BS is a rather difficult degree to classify. It can be taken both as an undergraduate, which lasts 5 or 6 years in addition to one year of practice as a Pre-registration house officer (PRHO), or as a graduate, on the 'Graduate Entry Programme' after having obtained another undergraduate degree of a good class, which lasts 4 years in addition to one year of practice as a Pre-registration house officer (PRHO). The degrees differ from other undergraduate degrees in that they are a professional qualification which entitles bearers to a guaranteed position upon receipt. This is not the case with other undergraduate degrees, so whilst the MB ChB are undergraduate/graduate degrees, they are perhaps more accurately conceptualised as a so-called 'First Professional'. It is a general/ordinary degree (not an honours degree), and as such, one is not awarded 1st class, 2:1, etc as one does for honours degrees. Use of the title "Dr" There is some controversy over the use of the title "Dr" by medical practitioners. The term Doctor literally means "teacher". It was formerly used as a title for members of the professions (ie clergy, lawyers and physicians). In recent times, universities have become substantially more secular, and have started awarding PhDs and other doctorates to individuals who have completed a piece of research in any subject (eg science, social sciences or humanities), and these individuals also style themselves "Dr". This practice, combined with the dwindling use of the title "Dr" by lawyers and members of the clergy, has left physicians and academics the only groups who commonly are styled "Dr". This has led to some academics claiming that "although British medical practitioners are addressed as "Doctor" they are not genuine academic doctors, as the BM BS degrees are Bachelor degrees rather than a doctorate". A profession is an occupation that requires extensive training and the study and mastery of specialized knowledge, and usually has a professional association, ethical code and process of certification or licensing. ...
