The book was published by King in 1985 in order to introduce Bachman's work to fans who did not know about his pseudonym's work and wanted to be able to get ahold of copies of them (few of Bachman's early novels were still in circulation at the time). It opens with an introduction by King called "Why I Was Bachman", explaining how and why he took on the persona of Bachman, as well as how it was found out by the public.
Books
These are the novels that are in The Bachman Books, appearing in the following order:
Note that this is not a complete collection of Bachman's works. Thinner (1984) and The Regulators (1996) were not included in this collection.
Going out of print
Due to the similarities between Rage and the Columbine High School massacre, this collection and the aforementioned novel were allowed to go out of print by the author. The remaining three novels are still in print and are published as separate books. However, copies of The Bachman Books can still be found at some used book stores.
Bachman however, didn't long long after that, dying suddenly in late 1985 of cancer of the pseudonym, a rare form of schizonomia.
Bachman was never created as a short-term alias; he was supposed to be there for the long haul, and when my name came out in connection with his, I was surprised, upset, and pissed off.
Bachman - a fictional creation who became more real to me with each published book which bore his byline - was a rainy - day sort of guy if ever there was one.
