The dreaded "Bad command or file name" message represented basically the same as the "Syntax error"* message from BASIC interpreters of the 1980's, and both resulted from mistyping a command to be executed or file name to be loaded or saved. Novices, in general, and quite a few experienced users as well, had trouble understanding the message, so in later versions it was changed to "<typed-in string> is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file". format is a command which reside n c:\windows\command the file name for it is format.com u r getting message that bad command mean that the format command is not in ur system.
Regardless, format c: will perform its designated task through to completion, regardless of command line switches issued with the command, such as format c: /s (that would be my choice), provided that the format.com file, as indicated by sekirt, exists at the current cursor location or in the existing path.
BTW, whenever you do get a "bad command or file name" response from issuing a DOS command, that does mean the file needed to execute that command does NOT exist in the current cursor location, or in the existing path.
