The decoration is usually awarded for long and loyal service however it could also be awarded for valor in combat and other merits regardless of time of service, it's could also be awarded to foreign soldiers.

The decoration has four grades:

• Medal of Honour of the Bundeswehr (Ehrenmedaille der Bundeswehr) for 7 months of loyal service.
• Cross of Honour of the Bundeswehr in Bronze (Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Bronze) for 5 years of loyal service.
• Cross of Honour of the Bundeswehr in Silver (Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Silber) for 10 years of loyal service.
• Cross of Honour of the Bundeswehr in Gold (Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Gold) for 20 years of loyal service.

Design

The medal is round, on it's center it's has the German eagle on the Bundeswehr version of the Iron Cross surrounded by an oak leaves wreath, on the reverse it's read "FÜR BESONDERE VERDIENSTE BUNDESWEHR" it's had a oak leave above the word Bundeswehr and that side is also surrounded by an oak leaves wreath. The higher grades are shaped in the form of a cross and in the middle are attached the round design of the medal, the reverse is plain.

The ribbon is black with two red strips beside it and golden strips of the edges as the colors of the German flag, the ribbon bar has a small claps of the decoration attached to it. The flag of Germany was adopted in its present form in 1919. ...
