Baixo Mondego is a portuguese NUTS3 subregion that comprises the lower part of the Mondego river. It is a subregion of Centro Region and is centered on the historical city of Coimbra (pop. 139,000). With an area of 2,062 km² and a population of 336,376 inhabitants (of which half are in the cities of Coimbra and Figueira da Foz) is a subregion with a mean density of 163/km². The Rio Mondego (Mondego River) is the biggest river exclusively in Portuguese territory. ... Centro Region (Região Centro) is a region in central Portugal, and its capital is Coimbra. ...


Economically, the subregion is dominated by the presence of the city of Coimbra, that plays the informal role of capital of the central regions of Portugal (large university and hospital, services, culture activity). There is also a strong industrial presence around the city of Figueira da Foz that comprises also a busy harbour and, along the shores of the river, there is an important agriculture activity.
