Baker's economy is based primarily on tourism. The town is frequently used as a rest stop by drivers on the I-15 freeway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. From Los Angeles, Baker is approximately two-thirds of the way to Las Vegas. It is also the last town for those traveling on CA-127 north to Death Valley National Park or south to the Mojave National Preserve. Baker can also be reached by Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach. For many years the National Park Service operated a desert information center in Baker. The center was closed in March 2006, and the staff moved to a refurbished railroad depot in Kelso. Baker is located at 35°15′54″N, 116°4′29″W (35.265099, -116.074768). The Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad created a flag stop there, though one had to buy their tickets at Silver Lake, approx. 9 miles to the north. Nothing now existis to show to where Silver Lake where was.
