Ballyfin (Baile Fionn in Irish, meaning "Town of Fionn") is a small village and parish in County Laois, Republic of Ireland. Located in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the village is near the midlands of Ireland. It is located in between the towns of Mountrath, Mountmellick, Rosenallis, and Portlaoise. According to legend, Fionn Mac Cumhaill is said to have been raised here. Fionn ate the Salmon of Knowledge which gave him untold knowledge. Later he became leader of the Fianna. Ballyfin is also famous for Ballyfin House, now the Patrician College. Ballyfin College was the site for an Irish Scout Jamboree in 1993. Ballyfin National School celebrated 100 years in 2002. The village also has an excellent Gaelic Athletic Association club called Ballyfin GAA. As Ballyfin is situated in the Slieve Bloom Mountains there are many beautiful walks quite nearby. The Slieve Bloom Mountains are mainly under wood logging these days, with logging companies up there daily. A stylised Celtic cross serves as the traditional logo of the GAA. Most of the area is covered by forestries, land used to plant trees. The trees were planted by local farmers to use up space for their rough rocky fields.


It is mainly made up of scattered farms and fields. The area of Ballyfin has few recreational areas such as The Cathole Falls the Ballyfin house, numerous Buildings dating back to the Georgian era.


The main Tribes of Ballyfin are the Hyland Clan, (or O'HaoilĂ in in Irish), these merciless family members have controlled most of the village of Ballyfin since the early 1100's, and still thrive there today. The Hylands are great. Everyone loves them

The decision to move 535 secondary pupils from the rural setting of Ballyfin College in Co. Laois and amalgamate them with the much smaller VEC school in the town of Portlaoise has caused uproar among parents, who are determined to reverse the decision.
Ballyfin is a great school, with a reputation for excellence and is located in a wonderful, clean, safe environment.
Ballyfin is not only home to a thriving secondary school but also regularly hosts the activities of organisations that include the Irish Red Cross, the scouts, vintage societies and fishing clubs.

His principal legacy at Ballyfin is the bow-fronted library that concludes the south-west wing of the house; but by 1822 Madden had been superseded by one of Ireland's most successful architects during the first half of the 19th century, Richard Morrison, who worked on the project with his son, William Vitrivius.
However, it is the interior of Ballyfin which constitutes the house's glory, thanks to the extravagant scale of the main rooms and the lavish quantity of decoration applied to almost every available surface within them.
And the grounds are also suffering from a shortage of funds for their upkeep: trees need to be thinned or felled, while other sections of the woodlands should be replanted; the grottoes and follies, including a 19th- century "medieval" observation tower, are suffering; and one of the neo-classical gate lodges is almost derelict.
