Balmaseda (Basque language; the formerly-used Spanish name was Valmaseda) is a town in the Encartaciones/Enkarterriak region of Bizkaia, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. It is located approximately 18 miles (30 km.)southwest of Bilbao. Balmaseda has been one of the most important cities in the Encartations region of Bizkaia due to its proximaty to Cantabria and Castille. It has been and continues to be a major center for furniture and steel constuction. It is also one the many historical cities in Bizkaia and serves as the capital of The Encartations region of the Left Margen of Bizkaia. Las guerras del siglo XIX castigaron especialmente a Balmaseda, una vez más, por ser paso entre la costa y Castilla, aunque a juzgar por las muchas obras emprendidas entonces, también hubo años de bonanza económica.
