Baltimore (Irish: Dún na Séad) is a small town in western County Cork, Ireland. The name means "white house" in Irish. Ferries sail from Baltimore to Schull further along the coast, Sherkin Island and the more remote, but breathtakingly beautiful Clear Island (Cape Clear). Baltimore was sacked in 1631 by Algerian pirates, and reminders of the incident abound in form of pub names, e.g. "The Algiers". It is believed that Napoleon obtained his famous white mare from the area.
Baltimore is home to some exceptional restuarants, notably 'Chez Youen', one of Ireland's more highly regarded seafood restaurants. The town has a number of appealing public houses, such as "Bushes Bar". Baltimore attracts visitors from elsewhere in Europe and the world, particularly those interested in seafaring.
Baltimore was particularly well-placed to benefit from increased tourist revenues during the Irish economic boom of the 1990s.
The Baltimore Sailing School and the Glenans sailing school are among the foremost sailing schools in the country.
The raid on Baltimore in 1631 took place in the context of a number of pirate attacks on coastal communities across the north Atlantic - communities in Iceland and the Faroe Islands were devastated by similar raids.
