The next Baltimore mayoral election will take place on November 6, 2007. Because Baltimore politics are dominated by the Democratic Party, in all likelihood the Democratic primary, to be held on September 11, 2007, will be the most competitive contest in this race and will determine the city's next mayor. Martin O'Malley, the winner of the previous election, was elected governor of Maryland in 2006. Therefore, city council president Sheila Dixon became mayor for the final year of what was O'Malley's term. Dixon has declared that she intends to run for election to a full term in 2007. Mayor Dixon is considered a strong front runner in the September primary. Dixon's campaign warchest recently topped $1 million[1] and she secured the first two major union endorsements when SEIU and the UAW endorsed her candidacy. Martin Joseph OMalley (born January 18, 1963) is a Democratic politician and the 61st and current Governor of Maryland. ... Councilman Keiffer J. Mitchell, Jr., former school administrator Andrey Bundley, and Maryland state delegate Jill Carter[2] are also running for Mayor. Keiffer Jackson Mitchell, Jr. ... The biggest issues in the campaign are likely to be education, crime, affordable housing and cleaning up the city. Dixon will have the advantage of incumbency, endorsements and money. Dixon's union support will give her a strong grassroots presence. While Dixon has announced that she has raised over $1 million for her campaign, her opponents have yet to announce their fundraising totals. In addition, a state prosecutor is currently investigating Dixon's office over perceived ethical lapses in the awarding of city contracts, and that could hurt her campaign, as well[3].


Kweisi Mfume, former Congressman and president of the NAACP, who was defeated in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2006, was at one point rumored to be considering a run[4], but as of June 2007, has not declared intent to run, and does not appear that he will run in 2007.
