Composition of the seagrass community in this portion of the BananaRiver shifts with extended periods of dry and wet weather, where widgeon grass dominates during periods of wet weather (lower salinity conditions) and the other seagrasses dominate during periods of dry weather (higher salinity conditions).
The northern BananaRiver is a part of the lands owned in fee title by NASA and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under a Memorandum of Understanding executed June 2, 1972.
The lagoon system is composed of three interconnected water bodies, Mosquito Lagoon to the north, Indian River to the west and BananaRiver to the east of Merritt Island.
Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River are connected by the man-made Haulover Canal and the Intercoastal Waterway.
The BananaRiver site is centrally located providing data relevant to potential effects of the surrounding industrial areas as well as providing data specific to the natural temperature and salinity conditions effecting the flora and fauna.
