Banda is a brass-based form of traditional Mexican music. Established in the late 1960s in Sinaloa, a state in northern Mexico, banda music exploded in popularity in the late 1990s throughout Mexico and in the southwest United States, primarily in Texas and California, but also in the Midwest states of Iowa, Kansas, and Illinois. Thanks to the rapidly rising popularity of La Banda el Recodo, the genre has taken on a different role.
