BIAL is working on a redesign of the Bangalore International Airport project. BIAL was originally planned to accommodate 3.5 million passengers a year, but this has now been redesigned to handle 11 million passengers. The redesign will see an increase in the size of the terminal, number of aircraft stands, new taxiway layouts and supporting infrastructure. However, the redesign will be incorporated into the present project schedule as BIAL is committed to opening the new Bangalore International Airport in April 2008. A plan is also being processed for a direct Rail service from Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station to the Basement Rail terminal at the new International Airport. Access on the National Highway is being widenend to a six lane expressway, with a 3 feet boundary wall, though construction is moving extremely slowly. As of August 2006, a brand new expressway is expected to connect the International Airport to the City's Ring Road. The Expressway will begin at Hennur on the Outer Ring Road. This is expected to be a tolled road. Land Acquisition for the road is expected to be complete by December 2006. The Indian Government has recently approved measures to enable the new Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to make changes in the project design in order to cater for 8.4 million passengers by 2010, against an earlier target of 2020. The initial forecast was for 41,000 aircraft movements per year in 2010, while the latest forecast has risen to 106,000 movements per year, forcing a redesign by merging the first and second phases of construction for 2010 completion[1].
