The University was started as a "Nucleus of Science" centre of University of Mysore. It was endowed with the status of a University on July 10, 1964 by the government of the then State of Mysore to consolidate institutes of higher education in the city of Bangalore. The Central College and The University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) constituted the original institutions under the umbrella of this university. With the promulgation of the Karnataka State Universities Ordinance of 1975, which aimed at bringing into uniformity all Universities in the State, the university lost its federal character and became an affiliated university. In 1973, the University moved to the Jnana Bharathi Campus located on 1,100 acres of land. Bangalore University is structured into Six faculties namely Arts, Science, Commerce & Management, Education, Law and Engineering. It has 41 post-graduate departments, One post-graduate Centre at Kolar (started during 1994-95), 3 constituent college, 473 affiliated colleges (of which 88 have PG courses) and several other Centers and Directorates of higher learning and research. It commands a student strength of nearly 3,00,000. As many as 400 Colleges and over 75 Post-Graduate Departments. The University offers 51 Post-graduate courses.
