Bangor is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,147. The town is named after Bangor in Wales.


The Town of Bangor was organized from the Town of Dickinson in 1812.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 111.7 km˛ (43.1 mi˛). 111.7 km˛ (43.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,147 people, 776 households, and 585 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.2/km˛ (49.8/mi˛). There are 841 housing units at an average density of 7.5/km˛ (19.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 776 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $31,033, and the median income for a family is $35,708. Males have a median income of $26,802 versus $21,597 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,679. 18.2% of the population and 14.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Bangor was one of the first towns in the county to engage in the manufacture of potato starch, the first mill having been erected about 1846 or 1847.
The four at Bangor were all on the Sand Hill or Taylor Brook, and were built respectively by Joshua Dickinson and Isaac Wilson, Charles Adams, George Adams and Abel Wilcox.
Bangor Grange, No. 967, was organized in 1898, has about two hundred and fifty members, and owns the building in which its hail is located - renting the ground floor for commercial uses.
