The Bani River is a tributary of the Mali. It merges with the Niger near Mopti. The Bani floods each year after annual rains, turning the city of Djenné temporarily into an island.

Between the town of Mopti, where the Bani River flows into the Niger, and the city of Tombouktou is a large inland delta with river channels and many lakes.
High ground is found in the southwest, where sandstone plateaus ring the plains of the Niger and Bani river basins.
As a result, water from rivers and wells is often contaminated with bacteria, and much of the population lacks access to safe drinking water.
