Banks in most countries are supervised by a central bank, such as the Bank of England in the United Kingdom, the Bundesbank in Germany, and the Federal Reserve System in the United States.
Retail banks are often referred to as commercial banks; in the United Kingdom they are widely referred to as high street banks.
In the United Kingdom the biggest retail banks (by assets) are Barclays, National Westminster (taken over by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2000), Midland (now part of HSBC holdings), Abbey National (which used to be a building society), and Lloyds.

The Bank of England is also less independent because the government of the United Kingdom reserves the right to overrule the actions implemented by The Bank in extreme circumstances (although this has yet to happen).
The United States had multiple regulations limiting both the geographic area of banks and the services banks could offer (which was limited by the Glass-Steagall Act) and as a result banks in the United States were forced to remain small.
This trend of bank merging is expected to continue since the super-regional banks (the banks which significantly increased in size after the Riegle-Neal Interstate Bank and Branching Efficiency Act was passed in 1994) are anticipated to continue to increase in size.
