Baragiano came to this area a few years ago, from the East coast, after studying guitar at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, living in Saudi Arabia and working as an audio engineer at a variety of places.
Baragiano composes all the music for his group of six performers, who use a variety of exotic instruments, including African talking drums, the balalaika (a Russian string instrument) and the dumbak (a Middle Eastern drum), along with more common instruments, such as violins, guitars, saxophones and keyboards.
Hejira’s music can be characterized, according to Baragiano, as having strong tribal world beats and enticing melodies that blend a variety of ethnic styles, jazz, blues and even rock.
