Encyclopedia > Barahir (Steward)

In the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, several Stewards of Gondor ruled during the Watchful Peace, and little is recorded about their reign.

Uncertainty about the fate of King Eärnur remained, and the borders were strengthened, but there were no new attacks on Gondor until the time of Denethor I.

Stewards that ruled during this time (Some notes follow) are:

  • Eradan (2080–2116) - First Steward to use Sindarin name
  • Herion (2116–2148)
  • Belegorn (2148–2204)
  • Húrin I (2204–2244) - Had two older sisters
  • Túrin I (2244–2278) - Married twice, several daughters from both wives
  • Hador (2278–2395) - From Túrin's second wife
  • Barahir (2395–2412)
  • Dior (2412–2435) - Childless. Succeded by sister-son Denethor.

Stewards of Gondor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (615 words)
Although not formally a Ruling Steward, Pelendur was the first to effectively rule the kingdom, doing so for one year after the death of King Ondoher and his sons while fighting the Wainriders.
Incidentally, Pelendur's actions were also influential in the rise of the office of Stewards to power, as Eärnil's son Eärnur left no heir.
When the Stewards ruled in place of a King, they sat on a simple chair of fl stone placed below the throne and ruled their office with a white rod.
