History Barataria, Louisiana was a Canary Islander settlement located south of New Orleans. The settlement was founded by Louisiana Governor Bernardo de Galvez in November 1778 and failed due to continuous flooding. By order of the Spanish government, over 2000 settlers from the Canary Islands during 1778-1783 arrived and settled around south Louisiana. The descendants of these Canary Islanders of Louisiana are referred to as Isleños.
