The Senate is a component of the Parliament of Barbados, which also includes the Sovereign (represented by the Governor-General and the House of Assembly.
The Senate is the upper house of Parliament whereas the House of Assembly is the lower house.
Both the Senate and the House of Assembly constitutionally share most of the same powers, however, much as in other Westminster System Parliaments, the lower house is more dominant.

As the head of state, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is represented in Barbados by a local governor general who acts on the advice of the prime minister and the cabinet.
In Barbados the Queen is styled "By the Grace of God, Queen of Barbados and of Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth." The present government led by Owen Arthur is proposing that Barbados make the final democratic step and make the nation a republic.
The bicameral Parliament of Barbados consists of the House of Assembly and the Senate.
