Barbara (Borbala) of Cilli was unique in her times, in that as a woman, she studied and became adept in Alchemy, which she demonstrated, with various degrees of success, to visiting alchemists.

In her unbounded ambition, she had her chambermaid steal the Hungarian Crown of St. Stephen from the fortress of Visegrad, and she forced the archbishop to crown her grandson, Ladislaus "Posthumus," King of Hungary, without the consent of the various Estates.

Then she fled, and placed the child and the Crown in the grasp of Friedrich III, of Habsburg, from whence it had to be ransomed with hundreds of thousands of gold pieces, by Matthias Corvinus, elected King of Hungary.

This theft of the Holy Crown of St. Stephen set the precedent for hundreds of years of Habsburg exploitation of the Hungarian domain.
