Barbourville is a city located in Knox County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,589. It is the county seat of Knox County6.


Barbourville is home to Union College.


Geography

Barbourville is located at 36°51'40" North, 83°52'46" West (36.861027, _83.879550)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.0 km˛ (3.5 mi˛). 9.0 km˛ (3.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,589 people, 1,454 households, and 859 families residing in the city. The population density is 397.1/km˛ (1,027.4/mi˛). There are 1,646 housing units at an average density of 182.1/km˛ (471.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 94.40% White, 3.23% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,454 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.9% are married couples living together, 19.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 37.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.18 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the city the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $13,297, and the median income for a family is $20,762. Males have a median income of $31,775 versus $18,102 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,485. 38.0% of the population and 32.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.4% of those under the age of 18 and 30.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Barbourville (population 3,589) was established in 1799 and is the oldest town in the mountains of southeast Kentucky.
During the 19th century, Barbourville was the largest city south of Richmond, a major stop for settlers and travelers crossing the Cumberland Gap on their way up the Wilderness Road.
Kentucky's first Civil War battle was fought in Barbourville in September 1861, and the site of the battlefield is being researched to see if part of it can be preserved and interpreted.
