From May 3rd to May 8th of 1937, factions on the "Republican" side of the Spanish Civil War engaged in violent street battles. It began when Communist-led police forces attempted to take over an anarchist run telephone building in Barcelona. The telephone workers fought back, setting up barricades and surrounding the Communist "Lenin Barracks." Five days of street fighting ensued. CNT workers were eventually persuaded to put down their arms by Garcia Oliver, amongst others. 1937 was a common year starting on Friday (link will take you to calendar). ... Five days of street fighting ensued, with anarchist workers and POUM supporters building barricades and exchanging fire with the Civil Guard.
The ultimate result of the battle was the further erosion of worker control of the city and the consolidation of government power over the major labor organizations in Catalonia, the CNT/FAI.

He returns to Barcelona only to find that the POUM had been "suppressed": it had been declared illegal the very day he had left to obtain discharge papers and POUM members were being arrested without charge.
