Encyclopedia > Bardufoss

Bardufoss is a small town (pop.: ca. 2200) in northern Norway. Located in Målselv between Narvik and Tromsø, it has a civilian and military airport, Bardufoss Airfield, suitable for landing bomber aircraft, fighter jets such as F-16s, and other heavy planes. It is also the home of the Norwegian Army's 6th division. Although not far from the coast, Bardufoss and the Bardu Valley is known for a somewhat more continental climate, and hence, colder winters (but with less humidity and not so much wind) compared to the coastal areas. It is covered in flora, and contains many natural resources. Bardufoss Air Station was founded in 1938, and is situated in Troms, in the far north in Norway, just southeast of Andøya Air Station.
RAF Gloster Gladiators and Hawker Hurricanes operating from Bardufoss played a vital part in keeping the Luftwaffe at bay during the fighting on the Narvik front in the April-June 1940 Norwegian Campaign.
Fighters from Bardufoss also had the task of providing aerial support for naval operations in the area, but failed to scramble in time to defend the battleship Tirpitz, which was sunk by Avro Lancaster bombers at Håkøya near Tromsø.
