Barkhan is derived from Baro Khan, the founder of the Barozai family of Pannis, who either ruled this area on behalf of the governors of Sibi or owned it himself. Barkhan, was given the status of a district on 31 December 1991. Presently, there is one sub-division, one tehsil and one sub-tehsil in the district.
