Established in 1885, the Barlaeusgymnasium is the oldest of the three gymnasia, although its origins stretch back to the Latijnse scholen (Latin schools) whose existence is documented as far back as 1594.


Thanks to its many well-known alumni, as well as its propensity to court controversy, the school enjoys great name recognition throughout the Netherlands.
