Barnes Rugby Football Club, a rugby union club from Barnes, is one of the oldest in the country. Formed by EC Morley in 1862 as the Barnes Club its earliest recorded match was in November 1862 versus Richmond, played at Barn Elms. The club played a hugh role in the early years of association football being a founder member of the Football Association and in December 1863 it participated in the first ever match under association rules, again against Richmond. The first three secretaries of the FA were members of Barnes. Morley was born in Hull but moved to Barnes in 1858 forming the Barnes Club, a founding member of the FA, in 1862.
In 1863, as captain of the Mortlake-based club, he wrote to Bell's Life newspaper proposing a governing body for the sport that led to the first meeting at the Freemason's Tavern that created the FA.
He served on the Surrey County Council for Barnes (1903-19) and was a Justice of the Peace.
