Barnesville is a village located in Belmont County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 4,225.

Geography

Barnesville is located at 39°59'17" North, 81°10'32" West (39.988129, _81.175483)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²). 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 4,225 people, 1,769 households, and 1,119 families residing in the village. The population density is 849.6/km² (2,196.6/mi²). There are 1,964 housing units at an average density of 395.0/km² (1,021.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.41% White, 0.71% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 0.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,769 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 33.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the village the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 82.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $23,925, and the median income for a family is $31,927. Males have a median income of $25,098 versus $16,119 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,105. 22.1% of the population and 21.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
