Barney is a purple anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex who conveys learning through jumping around singing childrens' songs with a friendly, optimistic attitude ("I love you, you love me, we're a happy family, with a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won't you say you love me too!").
Although the original videos were a modest regional success, Barney only became a mega hit when the character and format were revamped for series television and picked up by the Public Broadcasting System, debuting as "Barney and Friends" in 1992.
