Barney Clark was a retired Seattle dentist who was the first recipient of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart. Clark was 61 years old and had heart disease. He donated himself for scientific experimentation. The operation was performed on December 1, 1982 by Dr. William C. DeVries at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
