According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 113.9 km² (44.0 mi²). 108.6 km² (41.9 mi²) of it is land and 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is water, comprising 4.66% of the town. The highest point in Barnstead is 1,190 feet (363 meters) above sea level along the town's northern border, near the community of Locke's Corner. The town of Barnstead is situated just south of the lakes region in New Hampshire and is immediately surrounded by the towns of Gilmanton, Alton, Strafford, and Pittsfield with easy access to Laconia, Rochester and Portsmouth.
Of its 45 square miles Barnstead is made up of woodlands, lakes and agricultural fields and because of these areas there are many year round activities such as snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
Barnstead was incorporated in 1727 and was named for Barnstable on Cape Cod, MA and Hempstead on Long Island, NY where its original settlers had emigrated from.
