The first creation came in 1887 when the industrialist Sir William George Armstrong was made Baron Armstrong, of Craigside in the County of Northumberland. This title became extinct on his death in 1900. However, the title was revived three years later for his great-nephew William Henry Armstrong Fitzpatrick Watson-Armstrong, who was created Baron Armstrong, of Bamburgh and of Craigside in the County of Northumberland. William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong (November 26, 1810 – December 27, 1900) was an English industrialist, the effective founder of the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing empire.
In 1847, Armstrong founded the Elswick works at Newcastle, to produce hydraulic machinery, cranes and bridges, soon to be followed by artillery, notably the Armstrong breech-loading gun, which re-equipped the British army after the Crimean War.
Rifled and throwing a shell-shaped projectile, the Armstrong gun is regarded as marking the birth of modern artillery.

This title became extinct in 1987 on the death of the 1st Baron's grandson, the 3rd Baron.
