The Barony of Auckland exists in both the Peerage of Ireland and the Peerage of Great Britain. The first creation came in 1789 when the then Postmaster-General William Eden was created Baron Eden in the Peerage of Ireland. In 1793, he was made Baron Auckland, of West Auckland in the County of Durham, in the Peerage of Great Britain and therefore obtained a seat in the House of Lords.
