The first creation came in 1814 when the noted military commander Lieutenant-General William Beresford was made Baron Beresford, of Albuera and of Dungarvan in the County of Waterford. In 1823 he was further honoured when he was created Viscount Beresford, of Beresford in the County of Stafford. Beresford was the illegitimate son of George de la Poer Beresford, 1st Marquess of Waterford.
