The Dukedom of Wellington is a hereditary title and the senior Dukedom in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The first holder of the title was Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852), the noted Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman, and indeed an unqualified reference to the Duke of Wellington in a historical text or to a monument will almost certainly be a reference to this man.
Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the 1st Duke of Wellington), victor of the Battle of Douro, was, as the subsidiary title granted to him with the Viscountcy of Wellington (see below), created BaronDouro in 1809.
Field Marshal Sir Edmund Allenby, victor of the Battle of Megiddo, was created Viscount Allenby, of Megiddo and of Felixstowe in the County of Suffolk, in 1919.
Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, a senior British general in the Second World War, was created Baron Wilson, of Libya and of Stowlangtoft in the County of Suffolk, in 1946.
