It was created in 1806 for the businessman Peter Isaac Thellusson, who also represented Midhurst, Malmesbury and Bossiney in Parliament.
His eldest son was the aforementioned Peter Isaac Thellusson, 1st Baron Rendlesham, who took over the family business.
