The title of Earl of Sefton was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1771. The Earls bore the subsidiary titles of Viscount Molyneux (1628) in the Peerage of Ireland and Baron Sefton (1831) in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1628 Sir Richard Molyneux was advanced to the peerage of Ireland by the title of Viscount Maryborough, and in 1771 Charles, Lord Maryborough, became earl of Sefton in the peerage of Ireland.
His son was created a peer of the United Kingdom as Baron Sefton of Croxteth.
In 1828 the title of Baron Skelmersdale was bestowed on the head of the family and in 1880 that of earl of Lathom.

The Pepperfield in Sefton, comprising 6 acres of land lying next to the Hanecroft, was in 1294 given by Richard de Molyneux to his son Peter.
One of these was to Simon his brother of land called Hagenecroft in Sefton; the bounds are of interest: In length from the syke of the Yitefelt to the syke nearest Hagenecroft at the road from Sefton to Thornton; and in breadth from Pepper-field to the next road, which goes from Crosby towards the church.
In 1354–7 Richard de Sefton of Liverpool acted as the feoffee of Richard de Holland in a settlement of the latter's estate in Sefton; the remainders were to John, Joan, and Agnes, children of Richard de Holland; Croxteth D. iv, 8, 9.
