Viscount Palmerston was a title in the Peerage of Ireland created on March 12, 1723, along with the subsidiary title Baron Temple of Mount Temple. Upon the death of the third Viscount (who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom), the title became extinct. William Francis Cowper-Temple, 1st Baron Mount Temple (December 13, 1811)–(October 16, 1888), known as William Francis Cowper before 1869, was a British Liberal politician and statesman.
Two years later he was returned to Parliament for South Hampshire, and held this seat until his ennoblement in 1880 as Baron Mount Temple, of Mount Temple in the County of Sligo.
Lord Mount Temple died aged 76 at his home of Broadlands, Hampshire, and was buried at nearby Romsey.

The titles of Viscount Palmerston and Baron Temple of Mount Temple were created in the Peerage of Ireland 12 March 1723 for Henry Temple, of East Sheen, eldest son of Sir John Temple, sometime Attorney General for Ireland.
He served in various positions in the Liberal governments of the mid-nineteenth century, and on his retirement from the House of Commons was created Baron Mount Temple, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, 25 May 1880.
Wilfrid William Ashley served as a Conservative Minister of Transport in the 1920s, and was created Baron Mount Temple, again in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, 13 January 1932.
