Barre is a town in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 7,602 at the 2000 census. Barre town almost completely surrounds Barre city, which is incorporated separately from the town of Barre. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 79.5 km² (30.7 mi²). 79.4 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.16%) is water. Barre is known for its granite quarries. It was also a "hot spot" for Socialist activities in the early to mid-1900s.
