Barrett is a census-designated place located in Harris County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,872.


Geography

Barrett is located at 29°52'19" North, 95°3'43" West (29.871849, _95.062065)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 16.9 km˛ (6.5 mi˛). 16.8 km˛ (6.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.2 km˛ (0.1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.92% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,872 people, 946 households, and 741 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 170.9/km˛ (442.8/mi˛). There are 1,034 housing units at an average density of 61.5/km˛ (159.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 8.64% White, 86.56% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.89% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 6.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 946 households out of which 35.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 25.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.6% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.46.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.6 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,343, and the median income for a family is $35,074. Males have a median income of $32,250 versus $20,781 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $12,333. 23.7% of the population and 23.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.4% of those under the age of 18 and 33.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The community was named for former slave Harrison Barrett, known as "Uncle Harrison," who had been born in Texas around 1845 to slave parents.
Barrett, who died in 1917, was buried in Journey's End Cemetery in the settlement, and a museum and park were later named in his honor.

Don Carlos Barrett, lawyer and legislator, was born on June 22, 1788, at Norwich, Vermont, the eldest son of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Murdock) Barrett.
Barrett was elected president of the newly formed committee of public safety at Mina, on May 8, 1835, and on July 4 he was appointed to initiate correspondence with similar committees in the Brazos District with a view toward closing the breach between Texas and the Mexican government.
Barrett made no personal response to Smith's charges, but his colleagues on the council testified that he "has been one of the leading members of the Consultation and General Council and has been industrious and useful to the country.
